When it comes to prepping your home for the holidays, there are a few things to note. I just decorated our home for Christmas and while I was going through the process here’s what I kept in mind to tie together a warm, cozy, magical space to relax, watch movies and get cozy this season. Pick your palette: whether you want to go traditional reds or a more modern and simplistic blend of winter whites or go soft blush.. you really can’t go wrong. This year we opted for a palette of muted blushes, winter whites, wood tones & lots of tassel trims. Definitely not traditional but it still feels Christmassy!
Twinkle (lights): you can never have enough. So when you do see them on sale or at a good price, stock up. Twinkle lights come in all different sizes depending on how you want to use them; larger bistro lights for outdoors, tiny ones to decorate in glass jars… I could go on. Those little twinkling lights make any space feel instantly like Christmas so I try to incorporate them wherever I can.
Cozy staples: baby it’s freaking cold outside, so you might want to bundle up in the coziest blankets, throws and pillows with a holiday vibe. This year I’m loving all the muted blush and red tones available in everything from throws to pillows to vases to ornaments.
Greenery: you know I love my plants and greenery but Christmas time calls for extra. I’ve got euclyptus on my mantel (in a vase), garland hung around our back window and a wreath on our front door. There are tons of low maintenance affordable options to help tie your look together. Great places to start (in Canada) are Canadian Tire, Home Sense, Michael’s or your local florist/market store.
The tree: I was searching high and low for a flocked (faux) Christmas tree. For the last five years we’ve gotten a real tree from a local tree farm that my family has been going to for my entire life. Because this year, work required me to shoot my holiday content a little earlier in the season, none of the tree farms were open! (blogger first-world problems) sooooo, after I couldn’t find a flocked tree I could buy (in person not online – time crunch) I decided to go with the next best option I could find and got one from Canadian Tire. While it isn’t technically “flocked” it’s lightly dusted with a flock-like substance that looks kinda like snow. After I assembled it and plugged in the lights and added some ornaments we both fell in love with it. I might add, it wasn’t cheap but it can be stored and reused for years to come. When we move into a house I’d love to have more than one tree so I’m sure no matter how our traditions grow as our family does we can put it to great use.
Unique ornaments: some people go for tacky ornaments but that’s not really my thing. I love getting new ornaments every year from The Cross, a local design & decor store in Vancouver. They carry the most unique, vintage looking ornaments that I know will become family keepsakes down the road. We also hang ornaments that our families have gifted to us over the years, some from when we were kids mixed in with the new ones. We really didn’t overdo, added in a few cute white ones with black calligraphy I found at Home Sense and we are good to go.
Serveware: December is really the only month allll year that I crave and give in to my sweet tooth of hot chocolate. It’s such a treat. I’ve collected some cute mugs that we only bring out for the holidays and this year I’ve added this one. It’s also the busiest month of the year in terms of entertaining and having people over so I love to have some trays and serving platters on hand to use at dinner parties.
