INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY 2021

Every March 8, International Women’s Day (IWD) is recognized globally as a day for acknowledging the social, economic, cultural and political achievements women have made since its inception in 1911. It’s also a reminder that we still have a long way to go to achieve gender equity and taking action matters.

Over the past few years I have been working closely with One Girl Can, especially on IWD. If you’re unfamiliar, One Girl Can provides scholarships and mentorship to girls to help them achieve independence and become leaders.

It started with building and renovating girls’ schools in some of the most marginalized regions in Kenya, they found overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating facilities at every school and since they started, they have helped build 130 facilities.

They provide scholarships to the brightest, most determined girls in need of support. The program started with just 14 high school and 2 university scholarships and now has evolved into a flourishing program for over 850 girls.

They also provide mentorship programs that aim to help the girls build confidence, teach them about goal setting, career development, and provide leadership training from strong role models, mentors, and teachers. This is a critical step to truly becoming independent and achieving gender equality. You can help make a direct impact by making a donation or find out more about how you can fundraise to support. You can also contribute to my personal fundraising initiatives here.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, this year the One Girl Can Society has teamed up with a variety of women-led businesses who will be donating partial proceeds of sales to help One Girl Can build a dormitory for a school at one of the largest informal settlements in Africa–the first dormitory for this school, which will be life changing for girls living in this area.

Be part of the ongoing movement for global gender equality by supporting these amazing female-led brands.
